I was born in Bangkok and grew up moving around South East Asia. White face, blond, curly hair. Clearly different. Yet, at school, I was a kid just like the others and we would connect through similarities whether it was in our dreams, our stories or the book we both liked. Different, but similar.

I spoke English to my teacher, Burmese to my friends, French to my family, not knowing they were different languages. To me, they were just words I used, words for the teacher, words for my friends, words for my parents and brothers. Different, but similar.

Growing up, I began seeing a red thread that connects us all but is rendered invisible by cultural differences, racism, nationalisms, fears, misunderstandings, misconceptions.

Kurt Hahn said “Education is a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.”  Education, knowledge and awareness are all together ingredients to ignite a spark of understanding and connection between people.

Through my work, I hope to connect you, the viewer, to my subject so that you see the similarities, while acknowledging the differences. I want to pierce you to the core and trigger your interest, push you to open your mind and heart. I want to establish the ground layer of a relationship.

I hope for my work to be the binding synapse transmitting the story of one community to another, one person to another and with this, contribute to changing how people view the world  full of “similar others”.
